Small talk is one of the most underrated skills in English. Many Italian professionals feel nervous about it — but it does not have to be difficult. Think of small talk as the warm-up before the main event. It helps people feel comfortable and builds trust before a meeting or a negotiation. The key is to keep it light and positive. Talk about the weather, a recent trip, or something in the news. Avoid politics and religion — they are too controversial for first conversations. Ask open questions: "How was your weekend?" works much better than "Did you have a good weekend?" Open questions invite longer answers and keep the conversation flowing. Remember: people love to talk about themselves. So listen more than you speak. Nod, smile, and show genuine interest. With a little practice, small talk will feel natural — and it will open many professional doors for you.
